And although holiday plans have been put on hold recently due to the coronavirus crisis, it is still paramount that people are prepared for their next holiday.

But what is the one item that should be included in your luggage on holiday?

Family travel expert Erin Gifford spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about the one thing that holidaymakers should be including in their luggage.

Ms Gifford is a Washington DC-based lifestyle and travel writer who has previously appeared on Lonely Planet as well as founding her own site, Kidventurous.com.

In her expert opinion, ear plugs are the one thing that should not be missed off your packing list.

She said: “You never know who’s going to be snoring and how thin the walls of your hotel room may be.”

She also revealed that for future travel post-lockdown, there is one top tip that travellers must always follow, and she said it is even more important than what you’re packing.

“Get travel insurance and know what situations are covered by individual policies,” she said.

She added: “My 16-year-old daughter was due to go to Spain this month for Spring Break with her class from school.

“I was so glad the organiser made it mandatory that we all purchased travel insurance for our students.

“You never expect things to go wrong, but especially now for travelling abroad, travel insurance is a no-brainer.”

Travel expert and owner of family travel site, Kids Are A Trip, Kirsten Maxwell explained her own luggage hack but for travelling with children.

She explained that for going on holiday with children, medicines are the most important things to have at hand.

Ms Maxwell said: “Keep all medicine close at hand, in case of emergencies.”

But she added: “Pack your patience, you’re going to need it.”

The travel expert also had another luggage top tip that might be best for long-haul holidays which need bigger suitcases.

If it’s one giant suitcase shared between more than one person, then “packing cubes” might be the answer.

She suggested travellers have “a different colour for every family member”.

Packing cubes are zipped bags that fit perfectly into suitcases of all sizes.

Ms Maxwell has been featured in Lonely Planet and various other publications.
