Why Ares download is a good thing for the arts

I am personally fed up with the pop charts, I know that a lot of people like pop music, indeed I like some pop music, but every week when I listen to the official top ten on the radio I can’t help noticing that it has all got a bit samey. I read recently about a new P2P network, Ares Download and its decentralised network making it harder for ISP’s to track users and I thought to myself ‘Bloody Good Job.’ What Ares Download means to me is the final nail in the coffin of the media business model which churns out the pappy, crappy muzak that appears in the charts every week. The only way that bands are going to make money in the future is by being good, and building an online fan base who will willingly contribute to them. We are talking about true democracy in our choice of music.

Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead and a load more really good bands have already proved that this will work. In Rainbows, Radiohead’s latest album was sold over the internet with no record company involvement, and the NIN’s Ghosts was conceived for explicit sale of the internet, indeed there is no way that a record company would have commissioned Ghost, it’s too long and has no words, but the public still stumped up $750.000 for it online. Ares Download may be encouraging file sharing, but to me that is only a good thing.
